A quick checklist for figuring out whether you should be replacing your AC unit instead of simply repairing it:
If you answer yes to more than one of these questions, then it’s probably time to retire your old air conditioner and purchase a new one.

When purchasing a new or upgraded air conditioner, you should keep some things in mind, such as:
Getting the right air conditioner - whether it’s a window unit, a stand-up portable one or central air - means you’ll be comfortable, even on the hottest days.
The size of your unit affects its efficiency and productivity. If you purchase an oversized system, it may be unable to remove humidity from the air. With an undersized system, you won’t be able to create the cool, comfortable environment you want.
Let our technicians assess your unit's size to determine the perfect system for your home.
Before you buy, always make sure to try the units out in store to ensure you know how much noise they’ll produce, what the breeze feels like coming through the vents, and how easy the operations are to figure out.
The SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) of your AC system indicates its energy efficiency. The higher your SEER rating, the more efficient your home’s air conditioning is. If you have a low SEER rating, have our technicians replace your old unit to save you money on your utilities.
Here is an example of how the SEER rating works:
5000 BTU/h × 8 h/day × 125 days/year = 5,000,000 BTU/year
With a SEER of 10 BTU/W·h, the annual electrical energy usage would be about:
5,000,000 BTU/year / 10 BTU/(W·h) = 500,000 W·h/year
You can also calculate the average power usage as such:
Average power = (BTU/h) / (SEER) = 5000 / 10 = 500 W
If your electricity cost is 20¢/kW·h, then your cost per operating hour is:
0.5 kW * 20¢/kW·h = 10¢/h
Once you decide on the type of air conditioning you’re going to bring into your home, the next step is whether or not installation is necessary. With a room air conditioner, you may be able to install it yourself, depending on your health, how many helpers you have, etc. If you’re installing a window unit, make sure you seal up all the air leaks afterwards to avoid unnecessary air exchange during operation as well as keeping any critters from coming into your home.
Before getting an air conditioner installed, you need to make sure that your home and current system will work with the new unit. Larger room air conditioners needing their own electrical circuits, through-the-wall units and central air systems will need to be handled by professionals to ensure proper installation and adherence to safety requirements.
